Captain Dick Vincent, a native islander,
was born on Martha's Vineyard in 1953. His family's maritime history extends back
many, many generations and includes whalers, windjammer captains, lobstermen,
charter fishing captains and a chief engineer for the Steamship Authority. One
grandfather, Francis C. Vincent, carried passengers between the Vineyard and Woods
Hole aboard his catboat, the On-Time. Captain Dick's passion for
fishing began aboard his father's lobster boat, the Eight Bells, trolling for
bluefish with Japanese Feathers and hand lines. When he grew older, he was allowed
to take his grandfather's wooden skiff out into Vineyard Haven's outer harbor
to chase the fish with a 1¼ horsepower Elgin rope-start engine. The fish
were faster! His love of fishing continued to grow throughout his life, from hand-lining
giant blue fin tuna to fly-rodding striped bass. In 1993, he passed the United States
Coast Guard Master Captain's exam and began chartering out of Menemsha, guiding
anglers from all over the world. Two of the Captain's clients was lucky enough
to win the Boat-Bass Division of the Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish
Derby in 1996, 2004. Another placed third overall for boat bass. Also to Flashy
Lady Charters and the Captain's credit are three 1st place Junior Boat-Bass Division
